Just like Elephants…

19 05 2009

It seems that Mockingbirds never forget either. Here’s a cool video and article from the Guardian Newspaper in the UK which shows that Northern Mockingbirds seem to remember people that they feel have threatened them in the past. This is thought to be the first published account of wild animals in their natural setting recognising individuals of another species. Visit the Guardian website here.

Beers, Dancing and Birds

4 05 2009

Not just the end to a fine Sunrise Birding tour ;), but rather a combination of a few cool science articles sent to me over the last couple of weeks. The first is one passed on by Mike Ferrari, one of the Sunrise Birding walk regulars about how blue birds develop their amazingly bright plumage, not through pigment but through nanostructures that to the layman have a similar structure to beer foam (here).

I’m sure a few of you have also seen some of the viral videos on the web that have been doing the rounds of amazing dancing cockatoos. Well it seems like there are some scientific studies (this kind of study makes me wish I hadn’t given up on science after my Chemistry GCSE) that have discovered that as well as humans, some birds have an absolutely spot on sense of rhythm. The BBC website (here) has an article and some cool videos of the birds in action!  I have to say in my experience that the birds could probably teach most of the people I see down in SONO a bit about getting their groove on!!! Although to be fair the birds probably aren’t quite so influenced by the liquid mentioned in the first article when they get to strut their stuff.

Good news for the Kakapo

20 03 2009

After the mainly bad news in the state of the bird report post and the Spoonbill Sandpiper report yesterday here’s a slightly cheerier note on the flightless Kakapo from New Zealand (story here). On the same note there is an interesting series in the making where Stephen Fry, who is the ex-comedy partner of Hugh Laurie (House), follows in the footsteps of Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) to see some of the most endangered creatures on the planet. The above clip is from the series and there is a great accompanying website to the series (here). At the moment the video elements seem to be down – I hope it’s not blocked here in the US as some BBC content ca be>

Birds and Rock and Roll

19 03 2009

.

Seeing as the Conan video makes most birders look a bit dull and humorless, here’s a little more glamor: First a cool article about the links between musicians and birds/birdwatching from the Guardian Newspaper in the UK  (here).  The article has a bit of an UK indie music slant. The above video is for the Guillemots who I must say I kind of like. Easy to see their birding influences right there in the name. Also check out British Sea Power’s No Lucifer (here) another set of apparently avowed birders.

Conan O’Brien goes Birding

19 03 2009

My friend Annette sent me this amusing video which some of you may not have seen before (sorry about the poor quality but the Hi Def version that Annette sent me wouldn’t load). In fact Central Park is an amazing birding hotspot in Spring and probably one of the best in the North East. I’m just putting together details for a day trip to Central Park as we speak after the success of last year. Details will be out soon on my Trips and Tours page (I just noticed how badly it needs updating).

Tis the season to go Woodcocking!

13 03 2009

Spring is here and the woodcock are already out and about at Allen’s Meadows in Wilton. Thought this cool video from the Bird Chick might be entertaining to see. My personal note would be to pick an evening where the wind is pretty much still, as even a fairly light wind seems to keep the Woodcock from going into full display mode and they just hang out on the ground or chase each other around. I also once read that you need a warm evening over 40 degrees but I think that is more of a guide to when they might first show up. We’ll find out tonight as they are predicting it to only be around 38 degrees.

Happy Holidays Everyone

My cat 'Fatty' gets festive!

My cat 'Fatty' gets festive!

I hope everyone is having a great Holiday Season. I popped out for some Christmas Day birding, all in all it was pretty quiet but nice to be out of the house birding after a few days of work, shopping and CBC craziness. I got a load of Christmas presents completely unrelated to birds for a change and best of all a bicycle repair manual which will come in very handy for my BGBY!

In keeping with holiday cheer my parents sent me this heartwarming story about rehabbing hawks and teaching them to fly again with the aid of paragliders.  I guess it’s pretty much the same process that they have used successfully with Whooping Cranes.

Bird Movies: The Crimson Wing

22 12 2008

Talking of bird movies (see my post on Ghost Bird), it seems as if I was bemoaning the lack of them a little too soon. Apparently Disney will soon be releasing The Crimson Wing which focus’s on Tanzania’s Lake Natron and its  population of Lesser Flamingos.  From the trailer, the cinematography looks fantastic.

The film heralds the relaunch of Disney’s Disneynature company. “We hope these films will contribute to a greater understanding and appreciation of the beauty and fragility of our natural world”, said Robert A. Iger, president and CEO, The Walt Disney Company. I hope they do too!

Ghostbird – The Ivory-billed Movie

15 12 2008

Why are there so few movies about birds? It certainly feels like there is a market out there for them, as evidenced by Winged Migration and March of the Penguins. Anyway this movie takes a closer look at the possible rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker (more on the movie here).

Shoplifting Gull

14 12 2008

Someone sent me this amusing video recently. A story I had completely forgotten about from a year or two back. Amazing birds gulls.
